MBANSW is managed by a Council of 20 registered medical practitioners who are the Directors of the Association. The Council meets monthly to oversee the affairs of the Association and consider requests for assistance. The MBANSW Social Worker is in regular contact with doctors in need and their families to provide support and presents requests for financial assistance to the Council.

David Chen OAM

MBANSW President

I am a Roseville GP and have many doctors as patients. My interest in the health of my colleagues and my association with the Chinese Medical Association brought me to MBANSW. I have been a member of the Council of MBANSW since 1992. I served as Secretary for 12 years and have been President since 2005. I am pleased to give my time and effort to a compassionate a professional organisation which has been caring for colleagues since 1896


 
Felix Choi

I have been on the Council of MBANSW since 2007 and became Treasurer in 2010. My background is in General Practice and I have a special interest in Skin Cancer management. I enjoy my work and it has been a privilege to be able to give back and support others in the profession.


 
Russell Pearson

MBANSW Vice President

I have been on the Council since 2007 and Vice President since 2012. I have a general practice on the South Coast, a GP VMO appointment in palliative care, and an academic position at the University of Wollongong's Graduate School of Medicine. My research interest is in aged care. I enjoy the collegiality and wide experience of the Council, and the shared commitment to the welfare of our colleagues.


 
Furio Virant

I am a USyd Graduate. During my medical career I served in the RAN, chaired the Fairfield Division of General Practice, and the AMANSW Council of General Practice. I have been a board member of ADGP and served on the branch Council of AMANSW. I have served on several federal committees including the Professional Services Review Committee. I am at present a senior accredited surveyor for AGPAL, a clinical supervisor of medical students and have been partner in the Ray Rickard Medical Practice since 1978. I joined MBANSW in 1995 and am pleased to have been supporting my colleagues for more than 20 years.


 
Andrew Wines

MBANSW Hon Secretary

I am a foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon at the North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Centre and I have appointments to Royal North Shore, Ryde and Dubbo Hospitals as well as six private hospitals. Apart from time in Ireland and the UK on fellowship, I have been on the council of MBANSW since I was an intern in 1994. In 2003 I was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to assess support services available to doctors and their families in times of crisis.

I joined the Council in 2000 and have served briefly as Hon. Treasurer. I am an ENT Surgeon but have enjoyed branching out into other non-clinical aspects of medicine.


   
 
Reem Mina

I joined the Council in 2008. As an Occupational Physician my role encompasses assessment and understanding of the impacts of health on work, and work on health. Doctors and their loved ones are not immune to impact of these issues. The MBANSW has a long history of providing practical assistance to members of the medical community in NSW, delivered with compassion. I'm proud to be part of the MBANSW team.

I am an independent consultant with an interest in rural medical education and workforce. My past roles include Physician and Director of Community Medicine at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and NSW Chief Health Officer. I have qualifications in internal medicine, public health, medical administration and company directorship. I have been on the council of MBANSW since 2004.


 
Ian Wechsler

I am an ophthalmologist in practice for 39 years and I have an interest in medical legal aspects of ophthalmology. I have been an MBANSW councillor since 2011. I am on the Avant External Panel of Experts and I have been Secretary for the Western Suburbs Medical Association, a member of the Australian Medical Association and a part-time clinical tutor for the University of Sydney. I am a medical specialist on the Workers Compensation Commission and a member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists Public Health Committee.


 
Noel Wilton

I am a psychiatrist. Misfortune can strike any of us. I am pleased to be on the Council of the Medical Benevolent Association and to support our dedicated staff in providing psychological, social and financial assistance when needed to help our colleagues and their families in time of crisis.


 
Vincent Wong

MBANSW Counsellor

I have been a member of MBANSW since 1999, and was the treasurer between 2005-2009. I am an endocrinologist at Liverpool Hospital and a clinical academic at the South Western Sydney Clinical School, University of New South Wales. My daily work is a fascinating mixture of teaching, mentorship of junior doctors, research, administration and clinical practice. Being a councillor on MBANSW is an honour, and it is the perfect way to give back to the profession that I love.

I graduated from Sydney University in 1954. After three years hospital training in Australia I spent five years studying and working in England before returning to Sydney to practice Orthopaedic surgery. I joined the Council in 2010.

I work as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist and sit as a part time member of the NSW Mental Health Review Tribunal. I work in Sydney and country NSW, and I have had a longstanding interest in doctors’ health and wellbeing. I have been on the Council of the MBANSW since 2013 and feel it is important to be involved in supporting my colleagues and their families in times of hardship and crisis.

I have recently joined the council of MBANSW. I am pleased to have the opportunity contribute to an organisation which has helped so many of our colleagues for over a century. My practice in obstetrics and gynaecology has made me aware of the unique pressures of medicine and the fact that doctors must look after each other in times of misfortune.

I am a Medical Administration Registrar with a strong interest in improving health care. I have a background working in politics, private consulting firms and enjoy being involved in the administration of sport. I have been a member of MBANSW since 2016.

I came to work at MBANSW 9 years ago. I have experience in many aspects of Social Work including mental health, child protection, domestic violence and family counselling. More recently my work in EAP has given me an appreciation of the stresses and strains unique to medical practice. At MBANSW I am working with wonderful doctors who are compassionate and non-judgemental. It is my ambition that all doctors in NSW and ACT know that help is available if needed.

I am a CPA and have been employed by MBANSW since March 2016. This is my first role in a not-for-profit and I am very excited to contribute to such a worthwhile organisation. I have found it very inspiring to work with such a dedicated and supportive group.
